ETA – Conditions for entry to the United Kingdom
As of April 2, 2025, Romanian citizens wishing to enter the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). At the moment, the British government exempts passengers in airport transit from obtaining an ETA, as they do not go through border control.
What is ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization?
ETA is a digital travel authorization, which will be available from March 5, 2025 via an online platform. The introduction of the ETA aims to better control the UK’s borders, prevent illegal immigration and organized crime, as well as threats to national security.
The ETA is required for Romanian citizens who undertake business or tourist trips to the UK for less than 180 days in a year. In this case, no visa is required.
The ETA should not be confused with a visa for residence, study or work in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. You will need a visa if you wish to carry out such work.
Who needs an ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization?
All Romanian citizens will need an ETA, with the exception of EU Settlement Scheme residents, accredited foreign diplomats and those holding a UK visa of any type.
How much does it cost and how valid is the ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization?
The fee for the ETA will be £16 for both minors and adults and will not be refunded in case of refusal.
The ETA will be valid for 2 years and can be used for multiple journeys within the UK (multiple entries), making it much simpler for business or tourist travel.
Documents needed for tourism and business travel to the UK
For entries for tourism or business purposes, for a period of less than 180 days in the course of a year, non-resident Romanian citizens in the United Kingdom need both an ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization, as well as the simple electronic passport or temporary simple passport, valid throughout your stay.
Although it is not compulsory, health insurance is always a wise choice as it is modestly priced and can save you from unexpected high medical expenses.
