Important news for travelers: the rules regarding the transport of liquids in carry-on baggage are changing radically.
Starting March 11, 2026, passengers traveling through Bucharest airports can carry containers of liquids, aerosols, and gels with a capacity of up to two liters in their carry-on baggage.
The new rules apply to passengers departing from Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni) and Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (Băneasa), both managed by the Bucharest National Airports Company (CNAB). According to the company, state-of-the-art scanning equipment allows for a more detailed analysis of cabin baggage and its contents, including liquids carried by passengers.
Modernizing Airport Security Infrastructure
The introduction of these control systems is part of the process of modernizing airport security infrastructure and aims to streamline passenger flows without compromising safety standards. In practice, the new technology allows for the detection of dangerous substances directly inside the bag, making the limitation of liquids to small containers unnecessary.
New Scanners Eliminate Restrictions for Liquids in Carry-on Baggage
At the same time, authorities emphasize that security procedures remain in effect, and baggage may be subject to additional checks if the control systems generate alerts.
“The measure is possible as a result of the investments made by the Bucharest National Airports Company in modern, state-of-the-art technologies dedicated to the security control of cabin baggage, thus aligning the airports managed by CNAB with international best practices in the field. Through this investment, the company reinforces its goal of constantly improving the passenger experience, while ensuring the maintenance of the highest security standards,” stated Bogdan Mîndrescu, General Manager of the Bucharest National Airports Company.
Safer and Easier for Passengers
The implementation of the new rules aligns Bucharest airports with the trend of adopting advanced aviation security technologies, already in use or being progressively introduced in several European airports.
For passengers, the change simplifies the process of preparing cabin baggage and reduces the need to transfer liquids into small containers before travel. At the same time, airport authorities emphasize that the security level remains a priority, and the new equipment allows for high standards of control to be maintained.
The Bucharest National Airports Company manages the capital’s two airports, which handle the majority of air traffic in Romania, and the modernization of security infrastructure is part of a broader investment program in airport facilities.
Advantages of the New Rules for Passengers
Eliminating restrictions for liquids in carry-on baggage brings increased comfort, especially for business trips or city breaks. It is no longer necessary to purchase “travel size” containers; passengers can carry cosmetics, drinks, or gels in their original packaging. However, it is essential to check if your destination airport has the same high-performance scanners; otherwise, on your return flight, you will have to comply with the old 100 ml limit. This CNAB modernization transforms Bucharest into a modern regional hub, optimizing the time spent at security control.
