In recent years, Business Class has stopped being a one-size-fits-all product. Under growing cost pressures — including jet fuel prices, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for aviation and the European mandate on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), introduced from 2025 — airlines have accelerated their unbundling strategies. In practice, this means breaking fares down into different tiers, with a lower starting price and individual benefits available as separate options.
For business travellers, the consequence is simple but important: business lounge access is no longer automatically included and, at some airlines, depends on the fare selected at the time of booking. While Business Class remains positioned between Economy and First Class, the increasingly fragmented fare structure is redefining the benefits traditionally associated with the Business Class product.
To help you choose the option that best fits your needs, we have reviewed the official policies of several airlines that play a significant role in the business travel market.
A closer look: business lounge access varies by airline
The unbundling strategy is not yet widespread, but several major global airlines have already adopted it. As a result, business lounge access can vary significantly depending on both the airline and the fare type.
Air France
The French carrier has divided its Business Class offering into three fare categories: Business Light, Business Standard and Business Flex.
While all three options offer the same onboard standards — including a fully flat bed and premium dining — they differ in terms of flexibility, baggage allowance and ground services.
- Business Standard & Business Flex: Business lounge access is included in the ticket price.
- Business Light: Business lounge access is not included and can be purchased separately at the airport, subject to availability.
- First Class (La Première) retains its exclusive status, with unrestricted access to its dedicated lounges.
KLM
As part of the same airline group, KLM uses an identical fare structure — Light, Standard and Flex — for both World Business Class and Europe Business Class.
Standard & Flex: Include access to KLM Crown Lounges and partner lounges.
Business Light: If you choose this Business Class fare, business lounge access is not included. Under the official rules, passengers can purchase access to the Crown Lounge at Amsterdam Schiphol, subject to availability and only outside peak hours.
Lufthansa
The German airline continues to include business lounge access in its Business Class fares. According to its lounge access rules, Business Class passengers have access to business lounges on departure and, on selected long-haul flights, upon arrival. They can also use partner Star Alliance business lounges.
First Class passengers travelling on Lufthansa, SWISS or other Star Alliance flights, as well as Star Alliance Gold members, have access to business lounges on departure. Exception: The only formal restriction concerns the Business Light fare, which does not provide access to United Polaris lounges in the US.
Turkish Airlines
The airline continues to offer business lounge access as a standard benefit across all Business Class fares. Although international fares vary depending on flexibility, baggage allowance and mileage accrual, all Business Class fares include access to the Turkish Airlines Lounge, in accordance with the carrier’s official lounge terms and conditions.
TAROM
The Romanian national carrier retains a more traditional fare structure. Business Class offers two fare options: Business Semiflex (one 32 kg checked bag) and Business Fullyflex (two 32 kg checked bags, with greater flexibility for changes and refunds).
Both fare categories, together with SkyTeam Elite Plus status, guarantee business lounge access at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport through the business lounge.
British Airways
The British carrier includes lounge access across its entire Business Class offering: Club Europe for short-haul flights and Club World for long-haul flights. The benefit is also available to members of its frequent-flyer programmes — Silver and Gold members of the Executive Club, as well as Sapphire and Emerald members of oneworld.
In addition, Club World passengers arriving at London Heathrow can use a dedicated Arrivals Lounge.
Aerotravel recommendations for a more comfortable business trip
Light fares should not automatically be ruled out of a company’s travel policy. For short business trips that do not involve checked baggage or lengthy connection times, they can be a cost-effective choice. However, if your itinerary includes long layovers, overnight flights or the need for a quiet place to work between flights, it makes sense to choose a fare that includes complimentary business lounge access.
To optimize both travel budgets and the traveler experience, we recommend keeping three practical points in mind:
- Compare the fare difference. At Air France and KLM, if business lounge access matters, choose the Standard or Flex fare rather than Light. The fare difference is often lower than the cost of purchasing lounge access separately at the airport.
- Make the most of frequent-flyer status. Members with SkyTeam Elite Plus, Star Alliance Gold or oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status receive complimentary lounge access regardless of their fare — another reason to concentrate travel within a single airline alliance.
- Keep up with new alliance rules. Under SkyTeam guidelines introduced in April 2025 for Air France, KLM and TAROM, access to the alliance’s own lounges is guaranteed from a maximum of three hours before the scheduled departure time.
Important! As these rules are continually updated, when requesting a Business Class ticket, we recommend explicitly stating whether or not you require business lounge access. Aerotravel consultants will review the airline’s current fare policies and recommend the most suitable option for each trip.
Note: The information reflects the official airline policies in effect on the date of publication of this article (30 June 2026). As fare conditions are subject to change, we recommend reconfirming the applicable terms at the time of each booking.
